Conceptual Editorial

For this project, I was given an article from The Guardian and told to create two conceptual illustrations based on the article. One to be a feature illustration and the other a spot illustration. The given article in question was about the popularity of pizza and how its said popularity has risen over the years.
At first, I decided to create a few pre-research sketches because I wanted to see what ideas first came to mind before doing anything. I then later did look into the article for some research and created a few more sketches based on that.

I then went on to looking at other illustrators such as Peter Brookes, Jean Jullien, Nathalie Dion, Dan Bejar and Christoph Niemann. I wrote what I noticed at first glance then did further research for more detail and then tried to mimic their art styles as well as going into further experiments with the works of Jean Jullien and Christoph Niemann.

Final Design.

I decided for my final designs that the spot illustration was to be similar to a Christoph Niemann piece and the feature illustration be similar to a Jean Jullien piece.
For the spot illustration, I decided to make it seem like the pizza was being photographed by paparazzi so I used a digital platform to create the paparazzi and then went on to take photographs of a pizza and chose the best visual for the final design.
For the feature illustration, I was given the idea from a friend and fellow student to mimic a famous scene in a film called "Pulp Fiction" and mimic how light comes out of a briefcase but instead it's a pizza box. I first did multiple sketch attempts to figure out the angle I wanted and then created a final sketch before turning it digital.
